Co-presented by Sunrise Seagull Productions, The Diary of Fireflies (Cho Em Gần Anh Thêm Chút Nữa), the 1st ever Vietnamese Spotlight film included in the Newport Beach Film Festival’s Pacific Rim Showcase series, screened to an audience of nearly 600 industry notables, community leaders and film aficionados, successfully bringing Vietnamese cinema to a wider, diverse audience.

Newport Beach, California (Jun 1, 2017) – A special screening of The Diary of Fireflies (Cho Em Gần Anh Thêm Chút Nữa), the directorial debut of Van Cong Vien, starring Jun Vũ, Võ Đình Hiếu, Quang Minh, Hồng Đào and Chí Tài, was held as part of the Newport Beach Film Festival’s Pacific Rim Showcase series on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the historic Lido Theater in Newport Beach. In attendance were nearly 600 industry notables, community leaders and film aficionadas, including one of the film’s stars, renowned comedian Chí Tài.

The film was well-received and moved many viewers to tears with its universal message of the paramount importance of family and the significance of the fragility of life. For many non-Vietnamese audience members in attendance that night, it was their first experience with a Vietnamese film or a foreign language subtitled film.

“We know Vietnamese cinema is experiencing growth, that part is undeniable. What we’d like to continue to see and what we champion for is creating opportunities for diverse and independent films, such as Vietnamese films, to be seen by a wider audience,” said Thien A. Pham, President of Sunrise Seagull Productions.

“The Newport Beach Film Festival was extremely proud to host the North American Premiere of The Diary of Fireflies (Cho Em Gần Anh Thêm Chút Nữa). We are also very proud of our partnership with Sunrise Seagull Productions and the Vietnamese community. We look forward to an expanded Vietnamese program in 2018,” stated Gregg Schwenk, CEO of the Newport Beach Film Festival.

The film was co-presented by Newport Beach Film Festival and Sunrise Seagull Productions, and was able to be shared with the North American audience thanks in part to the support of Nguyen Cao Tung of Yeah1 CMG.

After the screening, audience members took part in an intimate Q&A session with Chí Tài, who candidly shared his views on current trends in the Vietnamese film industry, as well as his desire to see more Vietnamese films centered on good-storytelling.
